Amabel Banda

Amabel Banda is a young female artist from Lilongwe, Malawi, who enjoys portraying the modern African black woman. She is inspired by the female form and aims to express the beauty of women and womanhood in her art. The series of artwork that is exhibited here is called "My Mona Lisa." The paintings were in part inspired by the style and art of the famous Renaissance artist Leonardo Da Vinci. Amabel seeks to portray her subjects in a poised and poignant manner. The colors are selected to create the perfect contrast to the subject’s skin. Working on this set has been one of the most creative periods of her career so far. Amabel has shown her art at "Feminart," an exhibition organized by Story Club Art Café; she gave a solo exhibition at Afrochoc, and her work has been included in exhibitions organized by Art and Global Health Centre for Africa. Very recently she exhibited at Kaliso Art Gallery as part of their "Duwa" year. For this Art in the Park, Amabel has explored with color and you will see a lot of gold in her pieces. The gold represents the royalty of Africa and Africans.
